Purpose Shaped in Community
The Maplewood Care Foundation was established in 2024 by Maplewood Care Society to support the well-being of older adults across Abbotsford and the Eastern Fraser Valley.
Rooted in the Society’s long-standing commitment to care and support, the Foundation exists to invest in community-led work that strengthens quality of life, supports local organizations, and responds to evolving needs over time.
This origin informs how the Foundation operates today. Our grantmaking is guided by stewardship, clarity, and a responsibility to support work that is meaningful, grounded in community strengths, and intended to endure.
What Guides Our Decisions
Our decisions are guided by responsibility, clarity, and long-term thinking. We focus on how resources can best support community priorities over time, rather than seeking quick or easily measured results.
We invest in work that strengthens quality of life as people age, supports organizations grounded in care and connection, and contributes to resilient communities. Our role is not to replace existing efforts, but to reinforce and support them through thoughtful funding, shared learning, and collaboration.
Stewardship shapes how we work. We manage resources with care, make decisions deliberately, and remain accountable to the communities our work is intended to serve.
We take a long view—prioritizing initiatives that demonstrate purpose, alignment, and staying power, and recognizing that meaningful change is built steadily through trust, intention, and responsibility.
Distinct Roles, Shared Purpose
The Maplewood Care Foundation and the Maplewood Care Society share a common history and a commitment to care, dignity, and quality of life. At the same time, they serve distinct roles within the community.
Maplewood Care Society delivers care and support through its direct operations, and plays a leadership role in community-based initiatives that strengthen care and connection for older adults. As the organization from which the Foundation emerged, the Society remains a significant priority within the Foundation’s granting—reflecting shared values, deep community roots, and strong alignment with the Foundation’s purpose.
The Foundation exists separately to provide funding, collaboration, and investment that supports care and community well-being. This separation matters. It allows the Foundation to take an independent approach to funding decisions, steward resources responsibly, and support a broad range of initiatives aligned with its purpose.
Together, the Foundation and the Society contribute to a shared vision of care that is thoughtful, accountable, and responsive to changing community needs—each in a role designed to serve that vision well.
How We Approach Our Work
Our approach reflects how we engage as a funder and collaborator:
We are guided by responsibility rather than urgency, taking a sustainable view
We listen first, grounding decisions in lived experience and community priorities
We steward resources with care and transparency, funding work that strengthens quality of life over time
We prioritize collaboration and shared learning to support enduring, community-informed outcomes.
Working Alongside Community
The Foundation exists to strengthen the work already happening across the community, not to replace it.
Through funding, collaboration, and shared learning, we support organizations to build capacity, respond to evolving needs, and remain focused on meaningful impact as defined by community.
Our role is to help create and sustain the conditions that allow older adults, and the communities around them, to thrive with dignity, connection, and care.
Built for the Long View
In community work, meaningful change rarely happens overnight. It requires patience, intention, and decisions grounded in responsibility.
The Foundation is designed to support meaningful impact —investing in work that supports quality of life over time and contributes to the strength of the systems and relationships people rely on as their lives evolve.
Our focus is longevity and learning: supporting efforts that remain relevant, responsive, and valuable years into the future.
